Hello! My name is David Mulligan, I am a 3rd year Aerospace Engineering major.
Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society: This is an academic honors society, that recruits high-achieving students during the 2ndsemester of their freshmen year. We provide resources such as service opportunities and scholastic learning events, as well as social gatherings like dances and pizza parties. Another benefit of being in ALD is the opportunity to earn yearly national scholarships.
Why you joined the organization + what you do: I decided to join ALD during my freshmen year, primarily to make professional and personal connections. I joined the Executive Board this past summer to push myself outside my comfort zone; this is my first leadership position at UC, allowing me to improve my public speaking and organizational skills. I am the Director of Scholarships for ALD, so my primary responsibilities are to promote the scholarships mentioned above and decide which UC applicants will represent our chapter in the national competition.
How the UHP Leadership Roundtable helped + what you learned: The UHP Leadership Roundtable has given me a much fuller perspective on what it takes to be a leader. From speaking with other members of this experience, I’ve learned several new tactics for recruiting and engaging members of my organization. Some of these include offering attendance points/rewards, connecting with professors to share info in their lectures, and using smaller breakout sessions to make members more comfortable with participating. All these methods have generated significant improvements in ALD, specifically the attendance points idea. ALD’s attendance last year was typically less than 10 members; however, we boasted turnouts of 45 and 40 members during this semester’s meetings, respectively. I will continue to use what I’ve learned from my fellow honors students to further improve my organization.
