Senior Member of UCMC: The UC Mountaineering Club

Outside of science, one of my favorite things to do is explore the outdoors. The best part of creating memories outdoors is through friends, so I took to my friend’s recommendation to join the club. Through them I’ve been able to visit more than 10 states in under a year, climb two well-known mountains, and quarantine far from civilization. I’ve become a cyclist through the encouragement and support of some of those same members and can’t wait to see what else we do together next.

Our club’s biggest selling point was undermined during the pandemic. The entire basis of our club, traveling in groups, is far from pandemic appropriate and our numbers suffered. Weekend trips were obliterated, and we are just now beginning to allow day trips again. This UHP experience gave some insight into new ways to recruit freshman while being unable to provide experiences as well as fun online meeting events. Things seem to be getting better now that we can offer some heavily regulated adventures, but we will be sure to implement changes for retention!
